Art Work of Charlotte, North Carolina was published by the Gravure Illustration Company of Chicago in 1905.  The book was produced in nine paper-bound parts, enclosed in a cloth-bound portfolio.  Each part consists of six leaves of photogravure plates, one to four to a page, and one to two pages of text.  In producing this online version, the staff of Collections, UNC Charlotte hoped to convey something of the ambience of the original text along with the content. The images include homes, churches, commercial and civic buildings, street scenes and parks.  Art Work of Charlotte captures a day in the life of the city almost one hundred years ago.

The images were scanned on a Microtek ScanMaker 4 flatbed scanner using Adobe Photoshop 4.0 LE. The master images were created in TIFF format at 600 dpi. The viewing images are JPEG file format, at 72 dpi. All images are presented without touch up, cropping or other alteration. Each image in the book is accompanied by a caption which is reproduced verbatim in this exhibit.  In the transcriptions, capitalization and spelling reflect that of the original text.
